Spring IT Cleaning

It may not always feel like it, but Spring is all but here. Soon, we’ll have a lovely 12 hours or so of pleasant weather before it gives way to the oppressive heat of summer. Luckily, though the weather doesn’t reflect this, the season technically lasts just as long as the others, so you use that time for spring cleaning, including spring IT and computer cleaning.

 Literal Computer Cleaning

Spring cleaning typically makes people think of dusting and vacuuming, which are not necessarily associated with computer cleaning. However, the literal cleaning of your computer is an essential, though basic, aspect of computer ownership.

Just like your cars and homes, computers collect dust and pollen. And enough of it can cause performance issues or even overheating.

Cleaning the outside of your computer is a relatively simple process. You can use a static-free cloth to wipe down your screen, keyboard, and other external elements.

But the internal elements of your computer are what make the magic happen. To clean your computer, AesirTech can open up the chassis, look inside, and remove any buildup that’s collected since you bought it. You’d be surprised at how much we’ve found inside a PC!

Note: Avoid using water or liquid cleaners, which can damage your electronic elements!

Password Tidying

When was the last time you changed your password? How many accounts do you have open that you don’t use anymore? Have you ever gotten an email telling you your password was compromised but not gotten around to changing it?

Your answers to the above questions may indicate a strong need for some password tidying. But they’re not the only reasons to!

The fewer places where your details are floating online, the better. So take this time once a year to review if you have any open accounts you no longer need and update any passwords that have been active for more than a few months.

Hard Drive Cleanup

Hard drive cleanup is one element of IT cleaning you may be able to do on your own. Like password tidying, it’s about getting rid of what you don’t need.

Delete Unnecessary Files

Got some old menus or documents from a place you no longer work? Spring is the perfect excuse to remove all the files you don’t use and no longer need.

Remove Unused Programs

We’ve all downloaded a game or other program on a whim, only to find out it wasn’t what we were looking for. Many of us have also needed a program for a specific project but no longer have any reason to keep it.

These programs serve no purpose and take up valuable disk space on your computer. Delete them as part of your computer cleaning.

Organize

Does anyone else have a desktop with 40 screenshots? Sometimes, we save files to the first spot that comes up in the save list or accidentally put them in the wrong place. Other times, we do more of a similar type of project than we initially thought we would, and a folder to keep it all can do a lot to improve organization.

Organizing your folders won’t improve your computer’s performance, but it will make your life easier!

Junk Files

Finally, you have many files you didn’t download intentionally. They’re not viruses (hopefully), but you don’t need them. They’re called junk files and they frequently show up when you download something else. They serve a purpose, but that purpose is temporary, and deleting them will improve your computer speed.

Junk includes temporary files, cache files, and old downloads.
